Celebrating its decennial, antipodes café presents «el yuyo y el juego»
With a deliberately artless fashion, this puzzling edition intertwines handcrafted and industrial materials, production and printing processes for introducing the “yuyo manifesto” in form and content.
The collaboratively concocted list of attributes of the so-called unwanted plants defining this manifesto for social criticism, lay bare strategical concepts found across antipodes cafés oeuvre and modus operandi.
The publication features the manifesto in languages of places where the organization performed varied cultural initiatives during the past decade, and an invitation to apperceive it on its appropriation. Following those instructions and using the included tools, one can put the manifesto in action. (*) One can correct it, change it and even germinate it , as all included artisan papers are embedded with seeds from 10 wild flowering plants.(**)
Using the wooden/rubber stamps and the small pad with water based Chinese ink (wood soot), one can follow the simple instructions illustrated on the pamphlet, and stamp the “yuyo manifesto” in the fore-edge of 14 books. The original version of the manifesto is in Spanish and printed on one side of the pamphlet. On the other side are 8 translations. Seven main languages of places were antipodes café made diverse comments (Welsh, Basque, English, German, French, Portuguese, Norwegian) and also Polish, to highlight collaborations with beautiful people with that language as their mother tongue. Stamps does not include letters Ą, Ę, Ł, Ż but easy to make by using a toothpick and the included letters. The same for diacritical marks.
Yes! The Nepalese wild-crafted artisan paper, was made from wild Daphne shrubs (underutilized species) and it is embedded with several seeds from 10 wild flowering plants from the Americas: Antirrhinum, Petunia, Penstemon, Melampodium leucanthum, Monarda, Papaveraceae, Digitalis purpurea, Chamaemelum nobile, Dianthus repens and weed silene. These annual and perennial species tolerate partial shade and need four hours a day of direct sunlight. To germinate the seeds, just plant the biodegradable NTFP paper in a pot with moisturized soil. The pamphlet was printed on Risograph, using two green inks based on non edible rice bran oil. The paper and ink will compost away.
